Veterans Fair Aug. 11 in DeKalb County
Community members are
encouraged to participate in and support Vet Fair IV at Kishwaukee
College Conference Center in Malta, Saturday, Aug. 11, 9:30 a.m.-1
p.m.
While the event is aimed at veterans, it is free and
open to the public. The IETC/IDES and First Institute will provide
free Employment Seminars at 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Topics include
skill development, interview techniques, and resume building. Among
early commitments by health care providers, Kishwaukee Community
Hospital will conduct free blood pressure checks.
There will be live-fire artillery demonstrations,
multiple displays of flags, military equipment and uniforms (Civil
War to present day).
Rep. Robert W. Pritchard has given support to help
reach the veteran community. Emcee is Sen. J. Bradley Burzynski, and
Rep. Ronald A. Wait also is involved. Guest speaker will be SSG Rob
Kellogg, ANG, a local Iraqi veteran and author.

Veterans Assistance Commission
The DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission is an
agency that is operated by countrywide military veteran’s
organizations for the benefit of all military veterans. The
Commission provides aid to veterans residing in DeKalb County and to
their families. The veteran’s organizations are charged by the
Illinois Compiled Statutes with this duty.
The Veterans Assistance Commission:
• provides assistance with claims to the Veterans Administration for
such benefits as Service Connected Compensation, GI Home Loans,
Education, Pension, Health Care or for any other benefits that the
veteran or his family may be seeking from the United States
Department of Veterans Affairs.
• works closely with all veterans to procure local, state and
federal agency entitlements for which they are eligible such as
Employment, Public Aid, Food Stamps, Social Security,
Hospitalization and Counseling.
• works closely with all local, state and national veteran
organizations to ensure rights that each veteran is entitled to have
been granted.
• provides just and necessary expenditures for the poor veteran and
his/her dependents. The Commission provides payments toward the bare
necessities of life such as shelter, utilities and food. Total
payment per case must be comparable to the payment levels
established by the Department of Public Aid.
• acts as a liaison and case representative in relation to other
governmental and non-governmental bodies such as the United States
Department of Veterans Affairs, the Illinois Department of Commerce,
the Illinois Department of Public Aid and the Illinois Attorney
General’s Office.
• helps veterans prepare appeals, takes witness testimony, and
represents these veterans before the Social Security Administration,
the Review Board of the Veteran Administration or the Department of
Public Aid.
• makes house calls, writes correspondence and makes phone calls for
veterans who are sick or debilitated. It also assists in getting
local medical care, contacting the Department of Veterans Affairs
for care or treatment and/or transporting to DVA Hospitals and
clinics.
